Introduction

Periodontics  is one of seven dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association.

Periodontics is that specialty of  dentistry which encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes (such as implants) and the maintenance of the health, function and esthetics of these strutures and tissues.

To become a periodontist requires three additional years of training, in an approved American Dental Association Program, after Dental School.  This period of  study is concentrated on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of periodontal disease.

In addition to the educational requirements, Board certification recquires:

Successfully completing comprehensive oral and written examinations covering all phases of  periodontal disease and its treatment, including dental implants.

This examination is created and administered by the American Board of Periodontology.

A Diplomate is a periodontist who sucessfully completes the examination process as is subsequently certified by the American Board of  Periodontology.

Drs Butler and Salkin are Board Certified Diplomates.  Dr Salkin served a five year term as a Director of the American Board Of Periodontology and is still active in the exam process.
